![]() Solar Buddy - Information Session
May 30, 2023 6:15 PM
Solar buddy is a non profit, Australian charity that assists in rectifying the problem of energy poverty. They build awareness and provide a simple sustainable option for people living in darkness. The solar lights are non toxic, renewable and have proven to make a difference in literacy, health and economics for the family where solar lights are given. One in five people in the world do not have access to grid energy. The impact is profound. The impact of lack of lighting limits students to only be able to study in daylight hours. The impact of simple solar light on reading results is huge. Students literacy has increased by a third due to being able to read in the evening under the powerful solar light. Sheree is a teacher at Churchlands Primary School. She has been involved with Rotary for more than 15 years. Her mission as the sustainability coordinator at CPS is to encourage students to give back and think past their own lives. Students get the opportunity through the solar buddy program, to have lessons on energy poverty, and learn to put the solar kit together that makes the solar light by following the steps, just like building lego. Students also write a letter to send with the solar light. Students really love putting the kits together and they love the thought of helping other students in third world countries. https://www.youtube.com/@SolarBuddyorgLtd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2uB40xz7sY https://www.youtube.com/@SolarBuddyorgLtd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUEwJLjXjmU

Study Abroad: France
Jun 13, 2023 6:15 PM
Recently, Sophie embarked on a life changing exchange to France. She attended Sciences Po, Lille for a semester, met students from around the globe who had the same passions and interests in global issues as she has. She also gained a different point of view from attending the host university.
She is currently in her last year at UWA, studying history, politics and international relations. Outside of university, she works as a swimming coach for the swimming club, UWA West Coast. Throughout her life, she had moved countries as a result of her mother’s work. They were in Fiji, Australia and Scotland. The experiences that she had gained from living in these countries have heavily shaped my outlook of the work. Her experiences are one of the main reasons as to why she chose to pursue a double major in history and politics. |

![]() Enabling People to Do More
Jul 11, 2023 6:15 PM
How can we encourage more employers to harness the power of diversity and employ more people with disabilities? More importantly, how can you develop a mindset where you approach challenges as disguised opportunities? The guest presenter today is an entrepreneur and activist who uses stories from his lived experiences to illustrate important life skills about resilience, opportunity and determination. As a young boy growing up with spastic paraplegia; firstly, in the Hills area of Perth, and then later in the wheatbelt of Western Australia, he has gone on to TAFE and then Murdoch University where he graduated with an Arts Degree.
